Golf Putting Tips and Instruction to Lower your Score

The number of putts you take can account for forty percent or more of your golf score. So, the most direct golf putting tip is this: if you desire to lower your golf scores, you have to become an effective putter and focus on your golf putting basics.

What follows are some of the most critical golf putting tips and golf putting drills to rapidly improve your putting game.

Putting Setup

Key to putting setup is comfort over the ball, light grip tension and no breakdown in stroke. Use steady, pendulum-like tempo and accelerate through follow-through. Keep lower body "quiet" throughout stroke. One of the most important golf putting tips is to make sure your eyes remain over the ball throughout stroke.

Distance Control

Proper distance control is the most important aspect of putting. The key to avoiding a "3-putt" is to hit the first putt the correct distance. When putting, look at the cup as an intermediate target and aim 9 to 18 inches past the cup.

Reading Greens

When putting, examine the green and look for highest and lowest points leading up to the cup. The ball will break toward the lowest point the more severe the "low" the more severe the break. Aim your putt toward the top of the break rather than the cup. Here is an important golf putting tip when in doubt, play more break.

Consider the Grain and Direction of Putting Grass

The Grain and Direction of the putting surface plays a role in your putt. Look at the putting surface before putting where the grass looks darker, this means the grain of the grass is against you and therefore your putt will be slower. Conversely, if the grass in front of you looks shiny, then the grain is with you and the putt will be faster.

Golf Putting Drills

Below are a few key golf putting drills adapted with permission from the Golf Genie Tee to Green Practice Drills guide:

Distance Control: Putting "Feel" Drill - Perform golf putting drill on putting green with 15 balls. Initiate drill with 30-foot putts, then shorter, longer, uphill and downhill putts. Identify target line and set up for putting stroke. Turn head and look at the target throughout putting stroke ensuring good putting form. Doing so will help you "feel" the proper putting stroke to control distance. Conduct feel drill for each target, then transfer the "feel" to your normal putting stroke.
Speed Control: Putting Ladder Drill Perform golf putting drill with 10 to 15 balls. Place line of tees at regular intervals up to cup. Putt to first tee, then putt to each subsequent tee. If putt too far or short of target, start over.
Putting Accuracy Perform golf putting drill with 8 balls. Set up 8 balls in circle around holestart with 3 foot putts. If make all putts, move balls further out and repeat drill. If miss a putt, start over.

Armed with these golf putting basics and drills combined with a regular practice regimen, you will be well on your way to rapidly dropping your golf scores.

Lower My Golf Score- Tips Used To Rebuild My Game

Lower My Golf Score- Tips Used To Rebuild My Game

Here you are looking for some tips to improve your golf score. You can repair and rebuild your game. Keeping it simple and utilizing the following tips will lead to a marked improvement in your game. This will still take time and effort on your part if you want to realize a more competitive golf score.

These tips may seem basic but that is the secret. Get good at some basics.

First off you want to be physically in golf shape. What does this mean? You want to be flexible. Get some stretching exercises in your daily routine. The more flexible you are the more fluid your swing will be. Improve your balance by standing on one leg for about 30 seconds at a time.

Get your mental game in tune. Visualize yourself totally relaxed and making that difficult shot you may have in front of you. Picture it all the way through. Mentally do not be too hard on yourself. The more relaxed you are the more open your mind is to what you have to do.

Be consistent in these basics. Use this one grip all the time. Holding your club with your fingers and not your palm is the proper start to setting your grip. Your upper hand is the one that holds the club the other had just goes along for the ride. Grasp the club lightly with your last three fingers at the top of the club. At this point no one should be able to pull the club from your hand. You dont need a stranglehold of the club just a light grip.

Proper stance and addressing of the ball should be the same every time. Keep your knees slightly bent. Bend forward a little at the waist. Head and chin will be up to allow proper takeaway. Take a nice slow backswing. Almost always if your backswing is slow and controlled the clubface will always return to the same location you started with.

Here are a couple of tips outside of the basics to help with other common problems.

Curing a slice can be fixed by twisting your back hip rearward at address. This helps by setting you up in a position to take the club away to the inside. An inside out swing is what you want to fix that slice.

Problems with chipping will be helped by keeping your hands in front of the club face. Taking a shallow swing with no wrist break should be used for a pitch and run scenario. Try opening your clubface at address to get the ball to bite on the green.

Putting difficulties can be aided by simply using a relaxed technique and smooth follow through. Try focusing on a smaller target around the cup, like a leaf or blade of grass, to increase your aiming success.

These basic ideas when practiced regularly really benefited me in my ability to bring my game to next level.

Golf Putting Tips To Help You Sink More Putts And Shoot Lower Scores

Golf Putting Tips To Help You Sink More Putts And Shoot Lower Scores

Putting is perhaps the most mental aspect of the game of golf. The ball is just sitting there on the green and you can take as much or as little time as you want to hit your putts. Learning how to putt well will require discipline and effort on your part as it is a continuous process.

If you really want to realize your full potential as a putter then you will need to master the mental aspects of putting. However this does not mean that putting mechanics are not important. It is important to pick a putting style and putter you like and then stick with that approach and focus on the mental game to elevate your putting success.

A good mechanical tip is to keep your eyes directly over the ball as you putt. This will help you to see the line of the putt better. There are so many different putting styles and techniques that can work so the best thing to do is to try some of them and then make a firm decision to pick one approach and stick with that.

Do not try to chase the perfect putting stroke because it will lead to all kinds of putting problems. You may even end up developing the yips so stick with one mechanical approach and even just one putter unless it gets damaged and you need a replacement. Think of your putter as your own child. You would not just abandon it and replace it every few months would you? Of course, get the best quality putter you can to start with but do not change it if your putting starts to falter.

Rather look to the mental game to improve your putting results. Once you have a putting style and putter picked out you need to train your putting mechanics regularly. Often it is best to do this without hitting putts to a hole so just use your putter and a golf ball and do the necessary drills to keep your mechanics solid. You can even do this at home if you like.

The mental game of putting is a constant challenge as you will need to work on it both on the course and off. You will need to observe your thoughts and ask yourself whether or not the way you are thinking will help you or hurt you in developing more confidence as a putter. Confidence is the key factor you must build and maintain to be a consistently solid putter.

Your mind and body are extremely effective at judging the distance of a putt and executing the mechanics necessary to get the putt to the hole at the right speed and direction. However you need to avoid trying to actively think of distance or mechanics as you are about to strike the putt. You must develop a quiet mind that is focused sharply on the target when you are about to hit your putts.

Before you strike your putt you need to pick out a target. The break of a putt can influence the target you select. A good approach is to make all putts straight putts so if you think a putt will break 3 feet to the left then pick a target that is 3 feet to the right of the hole or imagine another hole 3 feet to the right of the real hole and putt to that.

Once you have selected a target you need to stay focused on that and only think of that as you strike the putt. Do not think about putting mechanics or how you missed the last putt or about dinner or anything else for that matter. Just let your mind and body work to automatically make the best stroke possible and eliminate distractions by staying focused on the target.

When it comes to reading greens the best thing to do is to trust your first impression. Take your time when you step up to a green and take a good look at your putt even from different angles but then come with a good first impression and then trust it. Apply some of these strategies to become the best putter you can be.

How Proper Exercise Can Help To Lower Your Golf Handicap

How Proper Exercise Can Help To Lower Your Golf Handicap

Some people like to debate whether or not golf is a "real" sport. I think it's safe to say that most of us do consider it a sport. It may not be as rigorous as football or as demanding as running, but it does require physical skills and it involves competition. Sounds like a sport to me.

As with any sport, practice is of the utmost importance. Practice right to play right. We've all heard the cliches. Practice makes perfect. Have you found that despite all the time spend practicing your golf swing, you just can't seem to improve much? Do you have nearly perfect form but you feel like your game's become stagnant?

What could be lacking when you practice all the time? Maybe what you're missing out on is exercise. You can't just swing and swing and swing and expect to improve. As you know, you'll find yourself improving quickly at first but then your skill level plateaus and you get stuck in a rut. What you're probably missing out on is tuning your body as a whole. It's not enough to simply practice your golf swing technique. It's important to do a variety of exercises to improve your golf swing and lower your handicap. These exercises are simple ones that anyone can do.

First you need to start stretching more. Stretch all your muscles every day, both before golfing and after. This will help prevent injuries and keep you from feeling sore after a grueling 18 hole battle with your buddies. Golf's a sport, right? Then treat it like one. All sensible athletes stretch regularly, and golfers should be no exception. There are tons of different stretches you can do that will help your game in the long run. Basically you need to stretch your arms, shoulders, neck, back, and legs. Any basic stretching exercises you do on a regular basis will improve your range of motion which will improve your golf swing and make you a better player. Stiff or tight muscles will prevent your from realizing the full potential of your golf swing. Don't skip the stretches. It's not a good idea to walk right out onto the course without warming up at all. Not bothering to stretch is a good way to get hurt. It's simple, if you want to improve your golf swing you'll exercise in addition to practicing your swing.

Another key to improving your golf swing is strength training. I'm not saying you need to be a body builder to improve your golf swing, but I am saying that a little working out will improve your game. It stands to reason that, all other things being equal, the stronger person will hit the ball farther than the weaker one. This is pretty obvious, so it's surprising that so many supposedly serious golfers never hit the gym. As with stretching, basic strength training will help you be more resistant to injuries.

Finally you need to consider your cardiovascular health when looking for ways to improve your golf swing. As you already know, it's not easy to knock the cover off the ball on the 14th hole. You can be pretty tired by then. But if you've been doing some aerobic exercises, then you'll be stronger in the end than your non-exercising opponents.

Exercise is the key to improving your golf swing and lowering your handicap. By stretching, doing some strength training, and running or biking regularly you'll find that your golf swing practice will be aided tremendously and your game will improve for sure.

There are natural or man made hazards in the golf course. You have to overcome those in minimum strokes and put the ball in the hole.

In order to play effectively you also need to know the equipment required to play golf. Get familiarized with the golf clubs. There are different clubs to be used in different situations.

To do practice you need to join a golf club or association where all the facilities are provided. You also need to have correct set of golf clubs. Once you go to the golf course you will realize that there is a designated area where you can practice your strokes. This area is often called the driving range.

You need to swing the club deliberately to take a shot. Only after doing this action over and over again you can perfect your stroke.

Practice Routines Lower Golf Handicaps

Practice Routines Lower Golf Handicaps

Countless ways exist to shave strokes from your scores. For example, an accurate pitch shot from 50 yards away positions you to one putt the hole, instead of two-putting or three-putting it, like you would if you hit a bad pitch shot. Most good pitches save at least one stroke, and maybe two or three, depending on the situation. Hit accurate pitch shots consistently and you'll lower your golf handicap.

Good ways to improve your pitching include taking golf lessons from a pro, watching golf matches on TV, and reading golf tips gleaned from magazines. The list also includes practicing the shot. In fact, practicing is the best way of improving any golf shot. It not only ingrains it, it also builds confidence in it, making it easier to hit the shot when necessary. One of the best ways of practicing a shot is by developing a good practice routine.

Benefits of Practice Routines

Practice routines offer big-time benefits. In addition to making the best use of your time, practice routines organize a workout session so you can get the most out of it. Practice routines also speed learning by letting you concentrate on mastering one golf skill at a time, instead of several skills simultaneously. In addition, practice routines let you focus and improve your weaknesses in an orderly fashion.

A good way to organize a practice routine is to divide it into two phases. The first phase focuses on perfecting the technical part of the shot. In this phase you break down the shot into its key physical components, like making ball first contact, and then you work on improving them individually. Once you've ingrained that shot component, you move on to another. Before long, you've perfected the shot.

The second phase takes things a step further. In this phase, you focus on improving performance rather than technique. The second phase usually incorporates a target in the practice session and simulates game conditions as much as possible. Doing drills and playing games is a good way to do this and to make practice routine fun and interesting. Below is an example of a sound practice routine.

Practice Routine: Technique Phase

Improving your putting means practicing not only your stroke, but also your pre-shot routine. During the first phase of the practice session, you could work on addressing the putt and aligning yourself to the target line. For example, place a ball on the green so you have a strait putt. Now, go through your pre-shot routine, making sure to align yourself to the target line. Then, back off for a few seconds. Now, do it again. Keep doing it until you've mastered it.

At another practice session, you might work on squaring the putterface to the target line. There are several techniques for doing that, which I've covered in my golf tips. Chose the one you feel most comfortable with and apply it. During this phase of the session, work exclusively on addressing the ball and squaring your clubface to the target line. Keep working on it until you've ingrained it.

Practice Routine: Performance Phase

Having practiced your technique, you can now switch to the performance phase of the routine. This calls for actually sinking the putt. For example, you might practice the Ladder Putting Drill or the Star Drill. For example, with the ladder drill you would practice sinking three putts in a row from two feet out. Then move to three feet out and sink three more putts in a row, then move to four feet, and so on.

You could also play a putting game, like Horse, with a friend in this phase of the session. Reminiscent of a game for basketball players, Horse involves duplicating a shot made by your opponent. If you miss, you get a letter, like "H." You keep getting letters until you finish spelling out "Horse." The first one to spell out the word loses. Playing games, like Horse, improves putting under pressure and makes practice fun and interesting.

Developing a practice routine is a great way of mastering a specific golf skill, like pitching or chipping. It's also a great way to get you to practice more. When combined with golf lessons from a local pro and golf tips from a magazine, practice is a proven way of improving your game. More importantly, it's a great way to cut strokes from your golf handicap. The more your practice, the better you get.

How To Shoot Lower Golf Scores Quickly

How To Shoot Lower Golf Scores Quickly

Learning how to play golf well does not have to be difficult or frustrating. It simply requires knowing the right things and then applying them to your golf game. One of the biggest keys to reducing your golfing handicap is to learn the game backwards. Most amateurs step up to the practice tee and the first club they grab is the driver.

While hitting the driver is a lot of fun, I can assure you that shooting low scores is just as fun if not more enjoyable than just hitting the occasional monster drive. The ironic thing is that if you do learn the game from the green back to the tee you will find that you will develop solid swing mechanics that will then translate into consistently longer drives that also find the fairway.

The first thing you need to learn is how to putt. There are many grips and putting styles you can use. A good tip to keep in mind is to make sure your eyes are directly over the ball during your putting stance as this will help you to see the line better. A great way to learn a putting style is to simply pick your favorite golfer and copy their putting style. Remember that if they are on the PGA tour using that putting style then it obviously works so just pick one style you like and then stick with it.

Remember to spend most of your putting practice time hitting short putts inside of ten feet. Short putts are the foundation of a solid putting game and they can make a huge difference as far as lowering your golf scores. The next key aspect of golf are the short shots around the green like the bunker shots, chip and flop shots.

With bunker shots you want to open your stance which means your feet are aligned to the left of the target if you are a right handed player and then you need to pick a spot around 3 inches behind then ball and hit that spot using a cushion of sand to lift the ball out of the bunker. With chip shots you want to place the ball further back in your stance towards your right foot and use a downward blow to hit the ball. Also maintain a straight line between the left hand and the club shaft through impact.

When hitting flop shots you will need at least a 60 degree wedge and place the ball further up in your stance closer to your left foot. Also make sure the lie is ideal for a flop shot which means there should be a cushion beneath the ball that will allow you to easily slide the club under the ball so you can hit a high shot that has a lot of spin.

Learning how to hit wedge shots between 40 and 150 yards is the next key element of golf. These are your money shots and they can make a huge difference in your scores. The ball should be positioned towards the center of your stance. Developing touch with these shots is a function of consistent practice so make sure you put in the time necessary to learn these shots. Also try to avoid too much mechanical thoughts when hitting any golf shot, simply pick a target and make the swing. If you need to practice mechanics do it without hitting any balls because the result will usually not be very consistent.

Your mid irons are the next step in learning how to play this game. Most people simply swing far too hard when it comes to the full swing. You need to relax and let the club do the work. Look at how many thin players there are on the PGA tour, this is proof that you do not need to muscle the club in order to get great distance and accuracy. Always swing well within yourself and maintain good balance.

The driver is simply an extension of the smaller swing and again make sure to swing within yourself. Hitting a driver far is a function of club head speed, ball spin and trajectory. The best way to ensure consistently longer drives is to master basic swing mechanics with the shorter clubs and then applying what you have learned to the driver. Follow some of these golf tips to help you become a lower handicap golfer.

Golf Swing Tips – Learn Simple Ways To Swing A Golf Club And Lower Your Score

Golf Swing Tips - Learn Simple Ways To Swing A Golf Club And Lower Your Score

The golf swing can be one of the most challenging things to learn and master. It requires commitment and effort on your part to put in the practice necessary to learn how to swing a golf club effectively. There are a few basic things you need to keep in mind in order to learn the golf swing and it is recommended that you take it slow and learn one thing at a time.

Once you feel comfortable with a particular aspect of the golf swing then move on to the next step. The golf swing can be broken down into the grip, stance, backswing, downswing and follow through. Let us look at each of these elements of the swing more closely.

- The Grip

There are basically three kinds of ways to grip the golf club. It is important to spend the time necessary to master your grip as this is a critical aspect of the golf swing. If your grip is incorrect it will affect your performance negatively even if everything else is fine.

The first kind of grip is the interlocking grip, this is where the index finger of the left hand and the small finger of your right hand interlock or hook each other. If you have short hands or your hands are very thick then this kind of grip may be the best for you.

The next kind is the overlapping grip. With this grip the little finger of the right hand will sit on top of the index finger of the left hand. You need strong wrists and arms to use this grip. Test each grip method and decide on the one that feels most comfortable to you.

The baseball grip is commonly used by most beginners. The index finger of the left hand and the little finger of the right hand do not overlap or interlock but they do make contact. This is basically as the name suggests the way you would grip a baseball bat.

- The Stance

The important point to remember with the stance is to keep your weight balanced and your feet position getting wider up to shoulder width as the club you are using gets longer. So for the driver you will want the most stability thus a wider stance with your legs shoulder width apart is ideal. Also the ball position should start at the center of your stance for a wedge and move up to the heel of your left foot for the driver.

- The Backswing

One of the biggest mistakes that beginners make is that they rush their backswing. Make sure that you take a slow relaxed backswing. You are better off being too slow than too fast when it comes to the backswing. Also work on keeping your left arm as straight as possible throughout the backswing.

- The Downswing

An important key to the downswing is to keep your head in the same position or as close as possible to its original location throughout the downswing. Make sure that you do not try to use your right arm to try to generate power. Instead you should get the feeling that you are pulling the club with your left arm. The power will come from the leverage that is created between the angle between the club and you left arm. The longer you can hold this angle the more power you will create.

- The Follow Through

At impact make sure that your head is behind the ball and keep your head down and let it come up with your right shoulder. Keep in mind also that at no point in the golf swing should you feel like you need to add power or strain yourself. Stay relaxed and you will soon develop an effortless swing that is not only accurate but also generates a lot of power and distance.

Take some time to learn the fundamentals of the golf swing before you go out on the course. Spend a week or two practicing your grip, stance and basic swing movements. Once you are ready to trust your mechanics then you can head out on the course and focus on your targets. When you are on the course do your best to stay away from thinking about swing mechanics and just concentrate on your targets. Train your swing and then trust it, this is the best way to get lower golf scores.
