Blame That Horrible Golf Course Sand Trap Bunker On Scottish Sheep

Sand Traps on golf courses - better called "Bunkers" cause great trouble for most golfers. How is that these demons came about to be the scourge of most ordinary golfers?

Amazingly bunkers came about due to geography and topography surrounding the origins of golf and golfing on the windswept desolate Scottish early historic golf courses/ because these holes were sheltered from the cold Scottish breezes, sheep would take refuge in these areas. Thus the holes expanded. When this land came to be used for golf pursuits, it was often too much hard work and time for grass to grow back. Hence the locals took advantage of the sheep's efforts and fashioned sand filled bunkers from the holes.

On these old courses, the golfing greens were sited so as to maximize the bunker's threat to golfer's shots. Hence the sand traps, properly called "Bunkers" came to be named "hazards" in the rules of golf and golfing. Later on in golf and golfing course architecture, golf architects would place these insidious "traps" so as to penalize wayward shots. As a result golf course bunkers are seldom in the middle of the golf fairway - they are usually on the sides of the golf course fairways. Talk about mean and sadistic.

How deep is the usual bunker? That is like asking - what is temperature in New York or what the temperature in Winnipeg, Canada is. It all varies depending on the course , type of sand, the golf course greens keeper preferences and laziness and even the time of year and weather - making a difference as to how wet the sand is and how much has blown away. The usual depth of the sand in a golf bunker can be said to be generally 2 inches in depth. This amount does stop the golf ball form burying too much on landing bit still provides a decent cushion for the escape shot.

Sand bunkers can be the most frustrating and feared part of most golfers. It is the last places most want to be in or finish. It's a reasonable fear but then again why should such simple sand in a hole cause so much grief on the golf courses of the world?

Fear of the golf bunkers need not be pervasive. It all comes down to a lack of technique, understanding and lack of practice of dealing with these shots. On top of that many golfers will only hit the ball harder getting even angrier all the time.

It all comes down to preparation and practice. Your local golf pro can show you easy tips. Most people never practice sand bunker golf shots. It's akin to a belief that if you never go near the water you will never. However in this case you will play golf, and at some time you will end up in the sandbox - properly called the "bunker".

Take the time during the golf season or better yet in the off season to ask your local golf pro for some help and tips on how to get your golf ball out of the horrible sand bunker. If you want to reduce your golf tension level and frustration level as well as reduce your golfing score this is time and money more than well spent.

Apart From A Proper Golf Swing Trainer, A Golfer Needs More Than One Golf Course!

There you are, the newest member of the golf retirement community, putting to engineer that innocent looking little white ball into the black hole at last. The soft sea breeze stroking your aching back after that one wild swipe at the dodgy little Callaway golf ball when you thought no one was watching. And something else is bothering you. You know what it is, but you don't want to acknowledge it, because you don't know what to do about it. You don't yearn for the latest golf swing trainer, golf cart accessory or other related retirement gift. It is something entirely different that is tap-tap-tapping away at your thoughts.

Too many greens to play, too many beautiful community golf courses whispering their names to you in that salty wind coming in from the sea. And there is only one you. With a wife that is adamant to have her say in the unfolding need for more than just the one golf course in one lifetime.

As that wise old German psychologist mentioned in quiet desperation, women are different. They are most likely aliens from a far off galaxy where there are no open green, gated golf course communities that are synonymous with heavenly pleasures. In that galaxy the rule has been laid down that a specimen from the female species will always have the need to have an own home where the specimen can indulge in home making. A serious golfer, in his advanced cosmic state, knows that it is not about the house, it is all about the green course. She will not let go. She will not understand. She will want her own home to beautify. She will want a verandah where she and her friends from that far off galaxy can sit down and drink tea while watching whales in the sea, or buffalos grazing, or soft green hills against pure blue heavens. That is what she wants, and you can just as well go and drown yourself with your beloved golf bag in that water hole at the 16th. She will not budge.

But then, to your relief, you remember that phrase of the great Chinese writer, or it could be an Australian, and you know that it is likely that you are making a mistake about this great man's background, but what he said was something like 'it is in the play that I'll catch the conscience of the queen'...

Careful planning, my golfing mate, is what will save the day. Those were the words of those great and advanced guys that roamed the great plains of ancient courses long long ago. Give the specimen a house overlooking the greens. There she can buy curtains to her liking, plant flowers in clay pots, read JM Coetzee or Ian McEwan whilst listening to Mozart. And the little wifey with her specimen friends can sit on the verandah, laughing and spilling tea while they watch your approach to do something to that little white ball that once again moved for only a few inches (the English), or centimeters (the rest of the world).

The plain truth is that this ancient wisdom of golfers now swinging clubs in the pinkish clouds at days end, only provides a partial answer to the greater issue. You know that if you can't get the swing right on this open green, there are surely so many other beautiful retirement community golf courses. Courses that will appreciate your next swing, which will be the one that Ernie Els aspires to.

The thing is, your specimen has now settled into her golf course community house overlooking the 18th hole. Since buying that piece of golf real estate for her, she happily opens the front door at your disheveled return from the game, and she always displays those bright twinkling eyes, shining with mischievousness. Now you know that she found something so great or amusing in that house overlooking the 18th hole that she will not even consider moving to a different, more lenient course.

Now, this is the moment that I will come to your rescue. I have given that game up because I do not yet want to play it in the day end pinkish clouds before it really is time to do so, on account of heart attacking golfing seizures. So I would rather sell you and your specimen a house at a gated, retirement golf community estate of her liking. At the same time I would suggest that you get your specimen's best friend to maneuver her golfing husband to one of the other beautiful courses. Doing so, you can explain, they can visit each other, go to art galleries, coffee shops, mesmerizing shopping centers and they can even sit on the verandah overlooking the very first hole, laughing their buds and their butts off, ...so long as you and your golfing friend can have another go at another course where nobody can possibly know your real handicap.

Just don't turn your eyes towards all the verandahs of all the other houses in the gated golf community, with all the other specimens rolling and reeling in laughter over their little cups of tea.

It will only prolong that fight of dwarfing inches towards the shrinking little black hole of redemption.

Golf Course Living in Charleston, Sc

With so many nationally ranked golf courses in Charleston, SC, golf is a huge attraction in the area. Some of the best courses are located in Mt. Pleasant and Kiawah Island, but youll find plenty of options throughout the Charleston area. In fact, there is at least one golf course in 12 of the 16 Charleston areas. Total, Charleston boasts 22 public and private courses and 13 golf course communities. Most golf courses in Charleston are open to the public and dont require you to live in the golf community to play. However, there are a few courses on which you can only play by proof of residence or by invitation from a resident.

Homes in Charleston golf communities generally offer large common areas and better than average amenities, such as swimming pools, tennis courts, and club houses. Homes on a golf course in Charleston start in the mid $200s and go up to several million dollars.

If youre looking for resort-style living in a golf community, Wild Dunes Resort, Seabrook Island, and Kiawah Island would be good areas to start your real estate search. These areas have multiple golf courses (some of which are beachfront), and they offer some of the finest amenities in all of Charleston.

Mt. Pleasant is also home to three nice golfing communities Dunes West, Charleston National, and Rivertowne Country Club. On James Island, Country Club is adjacent to the Country Club of Charleston, and its considered the only golfing community on the island. Hope Plantation on Johns Island is another option, and its also the only neighborhood with a golf course on the island. Daniel Island is set up a little differently in that residents from any of its communities can become members of its golf club.

More affordable options for living in a Charleston golf course community are Shadowmoss Plantation in West Ashley, Coosaw Creek in North Charleston, and Crowfield Plantation in Goose Creek. Also, Summerville has Legend Oaks Plantation as well as Wescott Plantation. The last option for Charleston golfing communities is Stono Ferry in Rural West Ashley, which is by far the most rural area of Charleston with a golf course.

The Top 5 Golf Courses in Brittany

Brittany is just a pleasant ferry journey away or you can take the motorway from Calais or even fly from many UK airports to several in Brittany. The sheer number of high- quality golf courses in Brittany make it the ideal location for golfers seeking a luxury holiday with easy-to-get-to access and that French "je ne sais quoi!"

Here are 5 courses that should make you consider a Brittany golf holiday.

5. Dinard

The oldest golf course in Brittany (and the second oldest in the country!) starts our list. Designed by celebrated golfing architect Willie Dunn all the way back in 1887, this is a course that has improved with age and simply has it all: great golf, sensational coastal views and a charming Art Deco clubhouse. It isn't for novices though, despite being a short 5814 yards - it starts off easily, but quickly ramps up the difficulty to tax the most experienced of golfers. If you can manage it, try and play midweek as it's popular with members at weekends.

4. Nantes La Vigneux

Nantes Vigneux is full of surprises - fortunately, they're all of the pleasant variety for experienced golfers. Designed by Frank Pennink, this course really is a hidden gem. Lovely fairways, delightful woodland, and a relaxed atmosphere are countered by the difficulty of the small greens and the River Cens. First timers may struggle to get a good score, but this is one course that gets better every time you play it, meaning that one Brittany golf holiday may not be enough for this gem.

3. Val Andre

At only 15 years old, it's easy to overlook Val Andre as a young pretender to the prestige of some of the older golf courses in Brittany. However, Val Andre is one of France's best "new" courses. The wide fairways will do their best to lull you into a false sense of security but that will soon vanish after your first three putt on the tricky greens (made all the more difficult by the coastal winds!). Expertly maintained, Val Andre is well worth a day's golf on a golf holiday in Brittany - not just for the course, but for the fabulous views and splendid seafood on offer in the nearby coastal town.

2. Saint-Laurent

Perhaps the most famous golf course in Brittany, Saint-Laurent has hosted the PGA Championship on numerous occasions and offers a suitably challenging parkland test. Tough off the back, friendly off the front, you have to have all the shots in the bag to put a good score together. It's a classic design with great variety and a lovely "clubby" feel to the place.

1. La Baule

La Baule is the most popular golf course in Brittany and one of our clients' favourites. What you get is two fine 18 hole courses - the Red and the Blue - and the jury is out as to which one is the better. With a hotel on site, many clients "play and stay" for a few days, enjoying not only the golf but the nearby resort and myriad of restaurants. The golf course designers were Dave Thomas, Michel Gayon, Jack Nicklaus Jnr and Peter Alliss - they don't disappoint. This is parkland golf at its prettiest and requires a tight driving game to the lush fairways. As they say, "keep the ball in play and the pars look after themselves". With the round topped off by the smart thatched-roof club house, golf days in Brittany don't come much better than this.

Honourable mentions must include the courses at La Bretesche and Saint Malo...With so many great courses and just a short ferry and drive from England's south coast, Brittany makes the perfect escape for golfers. Consider a golf holiday in Brittany next time you feel like hitting the fairways with friends!
